Barbara’s Story:

“Ok, this is a plea for help, but only for the fortunate...if you have a couple minutes, please read this, it is one of the craziest and saddest stories you'll hear, and we need help from our beloved community. My oldest daughter was born as a blue baby, but they were able to revive her, and she is now a tiny, but semi healthy grown woman, thank the Lord. My oldest son got inoperable brain cancer when he was 18 months old, he passed when he was 3 and a half. Six years later, we were blessed with a baby girl, who was stillborn at 8 months in the womb. Since then, we've had a healthy baby boy who is also grown (almost), and then six years after that we were blessed with a healthy daughter. Well, 14 years ago, I got cancer, they gave me six months to live. I said I'm not leaving my children, and fought the good fight. Since then, I have had cancer 4 times. I have gone through gruelling radiation, horrific chemotherapy, and bad chemotherapy. I lost both my jobs, we lost our house, moved to New Britain, it was cheaper back then, our son was bullied and beaten every day, even hospitalized, he was only 7 years old. As sick as I was, I got two more jobs and worked my butt off to get us out of New Britain, and we moved back to our beloved Southington, where I grew up. We were able to rent a house from a wonderful man, but our bad luck wasn't done. I got cancer again, lost my jobs, had crazy amounts of medical bills between surgeries, chemotherapy, and a multitude of medications. We had problems getting by, but we are good people and got caught up with everything we could. The bad luck started up again. Our last, and healthy baby girl was then six, and was diagnosed with a huge cancerous tumor on her diaghpram, the size of a piece of paper. Thank the Lord, the Childrens Medical Center went into high gear, and were actually able to get the entire tumor! She missed two years of school, and bless her, she just turned 18 years old, and will be graduating next year. She is an A student! Anyhow, last year, On New Years Eve, I woke up and kept telling my husband something was wrong.God bless him, somehow, he got me out of bed, down the stairs, and to the emergency room. Good thing, because I had a massive seizure and went into a coma. A few hours later, on New Years Day, I had a massive heart attack and flatlined. Well, they ended up using a ventilator to get me breathing again, and sent me to New Britain General, where I stayed in a coma for 3 months. My larynx was partially crushed, and they eventually stuck in a feeding tube and inserted a tracheostomy in my throat for me to breathe, because when they took out the ventilator, my windpipe kept closing up! I have no recollection of anything after that Christmas, this was all told to me by family and friends. They gave me 9 months to live. I have had a multitude of surgeries, and I was then transferred to Gaylord, where I had extensive rehab for 6 weeks. I was then sent home with breathing machines, and all types of medical equipment and home care nursing. The nurses taught one of my sons and one of my daughters how to use all the medical equipment, and they take care of me to this day. Well, the bad luck wasn't done with us yet! A week before Christmas this year, my husband was picking up gifts for the two youngest children, donated by the Grace Webb Institution in Hartford, and he fell down the outside steps into the street! He broke his shoulder, and had to wait 3 months for surgery, which he had, but is now facing a complete shoulder replacement, and hasn't been able to work since December 13 , 2024! At this point, our landlord decided he had enough of us and all of our problems, and just wanted us out of the house so he could sell it. We went to court and pleaded for 4 months to find another place to live due to the serious medical issues we are both going through, but the landlords attorney fought it and said no way, 3 months, take it or leave it, forcing us to accept the ruling. More bad luck. It got worse! After months of looking for a place that can handle our medical needs, we were literally scammed out of all of our security deposit money by someone posing as a real estate agent. We were completely embarrassed and totally humiliated! Now, we have too low of a credit score due to all of the medical bills, to find another rent, not to mention all this time living off of just my small disability check. Well, after paying rent and basic utilities, we must go to the food pantry (bless them) every week to feed our children. We have 2 weeks left to move out. But, it still gets worse, Gods honest truth, our car died in the middle of Queen Street on Saturday! This is all true, you can't make this stuff up! So, here I am, confined to a medical bed in the living room, hooked up to breathing machines, in the middle of the night, pleading, only to those who can afford it, PLEASE, help us! A monetary donation, big or small, maybe you have an old car your mom or dad doesn't drive anymore, or if you know of a ranch style or first floor of somewhere that would be willing to help us to move in with our children's 2 older kitties, we will pray for you and say blessings for you every day of the rest of our lives! Please, I cannot die knowing my family has no car, and no where to go. I will never be able to speak again, and am still fighting bone marrow spinal cancer this time! I have never done anything like this before, but am so desperate for my family that I love so much, please, again, only if you can afford it and can help, will you? Thank you for any good will, Barbara Perkins Sullivan, God Bless You.”
