Jane and Jim Young are celebrating their GOLDEN 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 14th and we're raising funds for a student scholarship fund in their honor. Sssh! It's a surprise!

As you may know, Jim and Jane first met as young, new, York Suburban Middle School teachers. As the story goes, Jim - the music teacher - needed the gym and the stage for his operetta rehearsals, and Jane - the phys. ed. teacher - held the gym keys and schedule. Negotiations were made, and pretty soon, Jane was painting sets for Jim's operettas and Jim was taking the bus with Jane and the cheerleaders to the away games. They were married in 1975, at a ceremony including many YSSD friends and colleagues.

Throughout their 60+ year combined careers, their lives revolved around Suburban. In addition to their full-time music & health/p.e. teaching positions, they also worked with students in various extracurricular activities: Jim assistant directing the marching band, directing the stage band, playing in the pit orchestra; Jane coaching cheerleading and serving on the SAP team, and many other "duties as assigned." Outside of school, when they encounter former students and colleagues, they're always quick to say hello and have a chat, and later recount a story about teaching them, and often times their parents or children. In their retirement, they remain connected to YSSD through attending retired teacher groups and trips and student games, concerts, and musicals.

It is our goal to raise enough funds to award a scholarship to a YSHS Class of 2026 student musician & athlete who embodies their spirit of community involvement with and dedication to YSSD. Our initial goal of $4,000 will provide a scholarship award that the recipient can use each year of college. Our grander goal of $25,000 endows the fund, creating an annually recurring award. I can't think of a better way to honor their love of the YSSD community. We're working with York Suburban Dollars for Scholars to manage the identification and award process.
