I am Kollengode S Venkataraman, the founder, editor and publisher of The Pittsburgh Patrika , the 25-year old quarterly magazine, founded in 1995. Here are a) my professional background and b) the list of my publications.
This quarterly magazine in English has been mailed free every three months to nearly 2000 homes in the greater Pittsburgh area. We could do this for all these years because of our advertisers. The funds from advertisers covered the cost of printing and mailing the magazine to our loyal readers -- 100 issues over 25 years!
Then last February, the Coronavirus engulfed the planet. The virus hit really hard the hospitality and education industries, the magazine's main source of revenue, thus bringing our cash flow to an abrupt halt. So, it is no longer possible for us to publish and mail The Patrika FOR FREE. And hence, we seek volunteer subscriptions from readers.
The Patrika's strength has been its credibility on account of its editorial integrity. For maintaining this independence, quite deliberately, The Patrika never sought financial or other support from any social, political, cultural, commercial, or religious organizations. The lead article in the latest issue of the magazine details why the magazine was started and what it delivered. Looking back, The Patrika is satisfied that it delivered for free what it set for itself for the last twenty-five years.
The magazine highlights the achievements of our community members who have excelled in their professions and extra-professional activities. These stories may plant seeds in our young readers about opportunities, responsibilities and needs in their adult life. Also, knowledgeable people among us regularly review music and dance recitals and other events, highlighting the cultural talents existing within our Indian American community right here.
The Patrika goes to the offices of local, state, and federal elected officials, local libraries, and media outlets, thus providing them with a credible window on how we are melding into the American mainstream.
Therefore, The Patrika seeks donations from readers, supporters, and well-wishers so that we can continue to fulfill our mission: to continue to provide a forum that informs readers about the diverse issues and challenges we confront. Our goal of $20,000 will cover all four issues of the magazine in 2021 -- in January, April, July, and October.
We welcome all your contributions with gratitude, and we hope that this is a temporary measure. And we pledge to update you on the total amount we receive from readers in response to this appeal. This GoFundMe page also provides the transparency on how much was raised against the $20,000 goal, and the names of the donors. Please note that your subscription is NOT tax-deductible since The Patrika is NOT a tax-exempt enterprise.
As the economy recovers, we will revisit our need for funding.
The details of business end of the magazine are discussed here . The magazine owes huge debt of gratitude to advertisers who have supported us over the last three decades -- many of them repeat advertisers from established brands and businesses across the Tri-state area. Our advertisers are the only reason the magazine has survived for twenty-five years.
Once again, we earnestly seek your financial support to keep the magazine coming to you in the coming years. And we thank our supporters.
