My name is Lily Wheeler and unfortunately on 22nd August 2024, my older brother Joel passed away at just 36 years old. Having lived his whole life with profound disability, and my mum being a full-time carer for him until the age of 18, Joel moved into Melbreck (a residential care home), where he lived an amazing and fulfilling life.

Joel spent the first portion of his life in and out of Great Ormand Street and lived his life with severe and life-limiting disabilities, being unable to walk, talk and do many of the things that we often take for granted. Melbreck was able to take a big weight off the shoulders of my family, and we are massively grateful for everything they have done over the last 18 years. Melbreck have been amazing at providing Joel with so many opportunities and experiences that he wouldn’t have got elsewhere, and so I would love the chance to be able to give back to them enabling them to continue to do the same for other residents.

In memory of Joel, I am planning to complete the West Dorset Three Peak Challenge alongside my work colleagues to raise awareness for adults like Joel and the amazing care that is provided for them. We would like to raise money to then buy Melbreck something to upgrade their sensory room to enable others like Joel to have access to similar experiences and care.

As a family, we are so grateful for the carers and staff at Melbreck, and we would love the opportunity to give back and continue Joel's legacy for other residents.
