Strawberry radar speed signs

Our small community needs a little help. Recently we have experienced some frightening events involving accidents with motor vehicles on US Highway 50. We know most folks coming up to Lake Tahoe are very excited and are in a rush to start their vacation. But, sometimes they forget our small community has a population of 50 permanent residents and hundreds of summer cabin folk.  Occasionally they need to turn off the highway and even walk across the road.  The posted speed limit through Strawberry is 45mph.  What we really need is for traffic to  slow down a bit to the posted speed limit and not use the center turn lane as passing lane.

In January of this year our son Jerret was hit by a car while trying to cross over Highway 50 to get to the store.  It was on a day that had a lot of traffic leaving Tahoe on a Sunday.  Jerret was able to cross the eastbound lane but got caught in the turn lane by the never-ending line of traffic in the westbound lane.  When the eastbound traffic came up the lead car, seeing Jerret, had slowed down and drifted away from him, but the second car must not have seen what was happening and decided to pass the car in the turn lane where Jerret was standing.  The incident could have been extremely worse, but fortunately Jerret got away with only a severley broken leg and ankle.  Meanwhile, the westbound lane never stopped, even when Squirrel and my other son were trying to pick Jerret up from laying in the middle of the road.

Another incident was our employee's husband had left the store to go home.  He drove the 1000 yards up the highway to his road had turned on his blinker to turn left, slowed down to wait for traffic to pass, and started to turn when a vehicle tried to pass the cars behind him and smashed into the side of his truck.  He's alright, again could have been much worse.

We would like to obtain better signage in order to draw attention of the folks driving through Strawberry.  We have asked Cal-Trans, CHP, and the County of El Dorado to help facilitate getting them.  We were told these agencies would gladly help expedite the permitting and installment of any new signs, but the County did not have the funding for the signs themselves.  The type of signs we were hoping for are the type that shows the speed limit as well as the actual speed of the vehicle.  These signs cost approximately $4000.00 Each  (one for each direction) If the fund raising goes well we hope to maybe replace the regular pedestrian crossing signs with ones that have flashing lights on them.
