Strathfield Council's - Flood Appeal for Gapyeong County

In July 2025, Gapyeong County, South Korea, Strathfield Council's cherished Sister City was devastated by catastrophic floods and landslides. Torrential rains triggered widespread destruction, claiming around 17 lives, leaving residents missing, displacing thousands, and causing more than $300 million in damage. Homes, businesses, farmland, and public infrastructure were swept away, leaving families and communities facing an immense recovery task.

For more than 14 years, Strathfield Council has proudly shared a Sister City partnership with Gapyeong, built on cultural exchange, shared history, and people-to-people connections. This bond was most recently honoured through the Battle of Kapyong Memorial at Ismay Reserve, recognising the Australian soldiers who gave their lives in Gapyeong during the Korean War.

But this relationship is not only about history and cultural exchange, it is also about solidarity in the hardest of times. Today, we extend that spirit beyond Strathfield, inviting Australians everywhere to join us in standing with Gapyeong.

The Flood Appeal for Gapyeong
Strathfield Council is proud to launch a Flood Appeal to support Gapyeong’s recovery. This is an opportunity for residents, businesses, schools, community groups—and supporters across Australia, to come together and help rebuild lives in our Sister City.

How You Can Help

• Share: Help spread the word through your networks—locally, across NSW, and nationwide.

Gapyeong’s road to recovery will be long and difficult but they will not walk it alone. Together, we can stand with our Sister City and show that international friendships are strengthened by compassion and action.

Whether you live in Strathfield or beyond, your contribution will help families rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, and find hope after this tragedy.
