Why Help These Kids?
Uvita is a rapidly developing coastal town, where the local community is working hard to keep up with increasing tourism. Children often drop out of school to start work early and many suffer from abuse and neglect at home. Forjando Alas ("Building Wings") is a kids' center in Uvita that offers a safe haven for kids to learn life skills, participate in alternative activities to promote self-esteem and healthy living, as well as psychological help for mothers and children in abusive situations. We offer the only after school program for these kids! We have been helping kids in the South Pacific Zone since 2011, but renting our small space is not sustainable.
Our goal is to build a **fun** and **interactive** educational playground. Surrounding the playground will be an edible schoolyard; kids will care for the gardens and be able to bring vegetables home to learn about healthy living.
Your contribution will help over 200 local children and families gain skills for a successful future and break the cycle of abuse.
What We Need & What You Get
Library/Computer Room: $4,000
1 Year Sustainability: $40,000
We will start one step at a time, paying off the land and securing permits, then move forward to construct the playground and with any extra funds, our new Forjando Alas Kids' Club piece by piece. First the playground and edible school yard, then the library, computer room, store, and finally dormitory to host international groups.
What You Get:
Love and gratitude from the kids, photo, video, water bottles and the opportunity to meet the kids face to face!
This project will impact over 200 kids and families in the Costa Ballena zone (South Pacific, Costa Rica), in addition to participants in our Youth Ambassador Program. The YA Program offers international student groups the opportunity to connect with Forjando Alas kids during the school year through a technology exchange program focused on learning about culture, environment and social issues. These groups then visit Uvita and stay at the Club. Kids are inspired through carefully crafted itineraries to start making a difference in the world. After each visit our students return home with a renewed sense of appreciation for what they have and a drive to create change locally and globally. Many of these students start their own initiatives to create social change.
