We Still Need Help to Stop This Needless Monstrosity

We still need help to fight this application

Thank you for helping us get the building of this needless monstrosity refused by Cornwall councillors.

But this is not the end of the story.

We need your continued help. The applicant will likely move swiftly to appeal. The case, we believe, will be largely determined on scale, mass and impact on the streetscape and residential nature of the area. When that day comes, we need to be ready to show how powerful a town of united David’s can be against Goliath to defend what is important in a town in which we are honoured to act as custodians.

We need your help to fight any appeal by Premier Inn. We want to strongly represent the 617 objectors and 102 donors to this GoFundMe campaign so far.

Please help us stop what the St Ives Town Council has labelled a “Carbuncle”.

Who we are

We are a group of concerned citizens of St Ives who are opposing this unwanted and unneeded over-development of our small, beautiful, heritage town that is important locally, nationally and internationally.

If built, this eyesore will forever ruin our iconic skyline. Completely covering the small site, it will massively intrude on neighbouring properties, overlooking them and causing light, noise and odour pollution. Immediately surrounding the site, living in a mix of social and private permanent residences, are families, couples, and elderly and vulnerable people. They do not deserve to have their homes and lives blighted in this way. It will also rob the town of much needed care home facilities.
It will be situated on a narrow one-way road with limited pedestrian access. With only 20 car parking spaces for hotel and restaurant visitors and staff, it will exacerbate the parking chaos and congestion problems of little St Ives.

There will be no economic benefit to the town and will likely drain money from the town. The low paid jobs it brings are of the sort that existing businesses struggle to fill now and replace a higher number of skilled roles.

St Ives already has too much tourist accommodation of all types and ranges. Claiming to be a ‘budget’ hotel, Whitbread have admitted it will be over £250 a night per room in season. This will not be a budget hotel.

How will we use the money raised?

The money raised will go on our campaign to fight the appeal – including professional fees. In the happy event that the cost of this is less than the donations, we will donate the money to charities benefitting St Ives – particularly the elderly (eg Age UK Cornwall) or those needing housing (eg St Petrocs).
