STOP THE SEVERANCE OF THE GROUNDS OF ANCASTER HIGH
Donation protected
WHY AND WHEN WE NEED THE FUNDS
Ancaster Severance is a grassroots organization. We have spent over $3,000 to date to run this campaign provided through generous donations of Ancaster and Hamilton residents that believe in our cause. However, we have come to the point where we need to oppose this severance on a more professional basis. (We need the funds immediately to acquire the proper services that include lawyers specializing in similar matters and companies that expand our support on a much greater level.)
For an explanation of how your donations will be used to help stop the severance and sale of the Ancaster High School lands and for an accounting of current funds please click below.

THE HISTORY
The grounds of Ancaster High School were purchased by the Ancaster School Board in two parcels, one in 1957 and one in 1967. A board member at the time, Mr. Walter Ferguson, Councillor Lloyd Ferguson’s father, said these grounds were for school use during the school day and community use the rest of the time.
THE BOARD DECIDES TO SELL
On January 1, 2001 an amalgamation of the City of Hamilton and its neighbouring municipalities (including Ancaster) took place and the Ancaster School Board as a result was amalgamated into the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. It was this school board on June 18, 2018 that voted to sever a large portion of the grounds of Ancaster High School and sell it to the City of Hamilton for the current price of $1.2 million per acre. It would remain greenspace if the city had the funds to buy it. However, the city stated that it does not have the funds which would mean the land will go out to tender in the private sector. A developer would buy it and townhouses would be built where kids once played soccer.
THE USE OF THIS LAND
For the last 62 years the townspeople of Ancaster have used this land for all kinds of community events. As Ancaster grew this land became more and more ingrained in the fabric of the community until today when it is used for everything from soccer, football, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, running, dog walking, large gatherings for events such as charity fundraisers, sports tournaments and Ancaster Heritage Days, or just to walk in a beautiful greenspace through trees as old as 180 years some of which are rare environmentally protected species such as the Butternut tree.
The 2,100 members of the Ancaster Soccer Club regularly play other teams from all across the Greater Hamilton area on the available 10 soccer fields this land provides.
