Support our legal fight to stop a Men’s Shelter slated to occupy the Ramada Inn located in Crown Heights/Prospect Lefferts Gardens Brooklyn at 169 Empire Blvd.
With about six weeks' notice, what was marketed and opened as a hotel amenity for the community, is scheduled to become a shelter for men experiencing either mental illness or drug addiction on June 1st.
We're concerned about the specific location of this shelter since it's on a busy corridor used by several vulnerable segments of the community including preschoolers, school aged children, teenagers, seniors, and other existing shelter populations.
The proposed shelter would be very close to a Battered Woman's shelter, which houses women and children, increasing the risk and safety of that vulnerable population.
• There is a family shelter just three blocks away.
• P.S. 375 and Ebbets Field Middle School just a block away, and several other schools are also within a 3-block radius.
• The Heart-to-Heart Day Care for Seniors on the same block.
Based on Comptroller Brad Lander's 2023 report, this community had already done its fair share of providing shelter beds! Since the opening of this shelter is supposedly due to the upcoming closure of the Bellevue/30th Street Single Men’s Intake and Assessment Facility, in Manhattan. Out of the 59 community districts in NYC, why move some of those shelter beds here? Was a fair share analysis performed and statement created? Was an environmental impact assessment performed?
We are one of the most heavily populated areas in Brooklyn and currently house over a thousand beds and 250 family units within one square mile; while other communities have zero or close to zero!
They have violated the Fair Share Law, Section 203 of the New York Charter, that there be a fair distribution among communities of the burdens and benefits of these types of facilities.
Help us fund a lawsuit to ensure the City
- Protects the vulnerable segments of this community, placed at risk by this shelter and
- Abides by the Fair Share law and places this men's shelter in a community in need of shelter beds.
