Help Gorham Back Out of the Amazon Warehouse Deal
Gorham has the opportunity to reconsider a 94-acre land sale that would bring a 24/7 Amazon last-mile warehouse to one of the most valuable development parcels in town.
To withdraw from the purchase and sale agreement, the Town must cover the cost of backing out. We are raising $135,000 to make sure taxpayers are not left footing that bill and to give Gorham the chance to pursue a smarter alternative.
First, we need to raise $5,000 to retain a law firm to work on our behalf. Volunteers are working hard to fight amazon at the Gorham planning board and the Maine DOT and DEP - but it's time to hire a lawyer.
Why this matters:
• A 24/7 warehouse means constant semi-truck and delivery van traffic, long-term road damage, and increased safety risks near neighborhoods and an elementary school.
• The projected tax revenue is modest relative to the size and value of the land, and may not outweigh long-term infrastructure costs.
• This 94-acre parcel could support higher-value commercial, mixed-use, or housing development that generates stronger tax revenue per acre with fewer impacts.
This is not about stopping development. It is about smart development.
We only get one chance to use this land well. If you believe Gorham deserves thoughtful, long-term planning, please donate and share. Together, we can give our town the opportunity to make a better choice.
Donated funds will be used to:
1. Help offset the cost for the Town of Gorham to cancel its Purchase and Sale Agreement with Amazon.
2. Provide legal support to help stop the deal from moving forward.
3. Cover the promotion and logistical expenses needed to run this campaign.
All funds will be administered by Gorham United, an all-volunteer group of Gorham Residents. www.gorhamunited.com
