Stop Overdevelopment in Cypress Lane Torquay

The Battle for Cypress Lane began almost 3 years ago when the community discovered that the council were proposing to sell public land (Cypress Lane road reserve and adjoining Deep Creek Reserve area) to the developer of a retirement village to be built on the site. This battle was won when the council listened to the people and overturned the decision and the land remains in public use. However, the second part of this fight is to ensure the development adheres to the Council guidelines and regulations and this will take place at a VCAT hearing at the end of April, and we need community assistance to help fund this .

We oppose the current proposal on the following grounds

• The density and height of the proposed buildings are too great for the low density residential zoning (LDZ ) and not sympathetic to the type of development surrounding the site,

• The long struggle to protect Spring Creek resulted in a Statement of Planning policy.(SPP) placing this land in a ‘Minimum Change’ area. Now, only 12 months after the Spring Creek decision, that very policy is under threat,

• This development is on the edge of the environmentally significant Deep Creek and we believe increased stormwater runoff will have lasting impacts on the health of Deep Creek .

The developers will be armed with a legal team and expert witnesses. The community needs to fund its own team to advocate for a development that fits the character of the surrounding area and to rebut the developers claims.
