*SAY NO TO CURRAHEEN INDUSTRIAL PIGGERY AND KEEP EAST CORK BEAUTIFUL*
This campaign is to raise funds for the POWER Group East Cork ( Protection of Water, Environment and Residents) to help in their continued fight to stop Derra Farms Ltd develop an Industrial Pig Farm at Curraheen, Ballymacoda Planning Application No. 20/5815. The developer plans to replace a small traditional farm with a large scale industrial unit, to fatten 4224 pigs indoors. The pigs will be fattened for 12 weeks before being sent for slaughter. This equate to c. 18000 pigs per year being housed in Curraheen. They project the production of 7.3 million litres of slurry, which will be spread on 17 townlands across the East Cork region.
Following on from the decision of Cork County Council on the 6th of April to grant permission for the development. The next stage is to appeal the decision to an Bord Pleanála, on behalf of the people of East Cork and surrounding areas. We have a short time to raise this money, to enable us to do this.
This is a very expensive business and all moneys raised will go towards the appeal, expert fees including solicitor, hydrogeologist, ecologist, and planning consultant. The people have showed tremendous solidarity and support to the campaign so far. With over 3000 people signing our online petition, and 220 objections submitted to the council. We are extremely grateful to all those who have donated thus far We sincerely hope that the people will once again come up trumps for us and enable us to continue to fight to Keep East Cork Beautiful and protect the quality of life and health of people living in the area, animal welfare, water, environment, air quality, tourism and fishing industry.
