North Springs Improvement District ("NSID") (our water utility organization) acquired the Heron Bay Golf Course from ClubLink in October 2021. NSID is planning to sell 69 acres of the golf course to Michal Aviv and David Lahmy, of Upper Buena Vista Management (UBVM) for the purpose of building a sprawling, commercial development! In business for seven years, UBVM previously built a very small retail space on a city block in Miami.
The proposal submitted by the developer is 529,000 square feet of retail and office space! By way of comparison, City Place in West Palm Beach has 600,000 square feet of space; The Promenade in Coconut Creek has less than 300,000 square feet of space; and Mizner Park in Boca Raton has less than 400,000 square feet of space.
In addition to filling up the roadside on Nob Hill, the new Heron Bay Shopping Center will engulf many homes within Heron Bay. Parkland will be the new shopping, restaurant, and bar destination city of South Florida. This is not good for Parkland or Coral Springs. Goodbye quiet, peaceful, residential lifestyle. Hello, loud noise at all hours of the night (every night), traffic and more people coming to our community.
As residents of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida, passionately opposed to this project, we formed a non-profit organization, Citizens Against Golf Course Redevelopment, Inc. We are raising money for purposes of fighting the proposed development and to ensure the residents of Parkland and Coral Springs have a “seat at the table” for purposes of controlling our fate.
Funds raised will go towards paying legal fees and marketing costs for efforts to ensure residents have a voice during this most important planning phase of the proposed development. Any excess funds raised will be donated to Conservation Florida, a charitable organization formed for the purpose of protecting Florida’s natural and agricultural landscapes for future generations.
In December 1997, when the Heron Bay residential community was planned, a 30-year restrictive covenant was executed such that the owner of the Heron Bay Golf Course would not be permitted to build on the golf course. Although the golf course changed hands several times since 1997, the restrictive covenant remains in place as of today, November 2021.
Although more than six years remain on the restrictive covenant, statements made by local leaders indicate that the restrictive covenant will be circumvented so that the developer can build a shopping center as soon as possible. With your help, we can enforce the restrictive covenant and use it as a tool to ensure the residents of Parkland and Coral Springs are not taken advantage of.
