We are the small Texas community of Axtell, Texas, combatting a proposed landfill to be placed on land surrounded by our farmland, ranches, cemeteries and directly over water supply.
Here are the facts:
· On July 31, 2018, the Waco City Council approved the purchase of land outside of the county in Axtell, Texas for the purpose of a landfill.
· The Waco City Council’s actions mark an abrupt change from their original plans dating back for many years. The city currently owns another site located directly adjacent to current landfill, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on testing and prep, stated their testing found no toxins or pollution, and since 2015 defended this other site as the best option.
· The small unincorporated community of Axtell, Texas, includes primarily farmers, ranchers, educators, and agricultural businesses. The Waco City Council does not include this area as part of their district representation.
· The Waco City Council chose not to speak publicly or privately with any of the residents of the Axtell community about the proposed landfill site and continues to withhold information giving only a 3 day notice before voting to approve the purchase.
· The Waco City Council negotiated the land purchase through multiple 3rd party arrangements withholding their intensions from the sellers.
Additional facts about why this site is unimaginable for a landfill are captured in this story from the Waco Tribune Herald.
