Still Doing Democracy! Finding Common Ground and Acting for the Common Good

JoAnn McAllister  and Jim Smith

Still Doing Democracy! Finding Common Ground and Acting for the Common Good – a book, interactive website, and training program – responds to our current political, social, and cultural polarization and the lack of participation in community and civic life.  Democracy is not won and done; it requires consistent and persistent doing. If we are to reaffirm democratic values and preserve the progress made to protect and expand human rights, create safe and healthy communities, and preserve the natural world, ordinary people must become re-engaged in the everyday work of doing democracy.

McAllister and Smith propose a framework for becoming an effective and engaged citizen and provide practical tools for understanding the beliefs that divide us, listening to and appreciating the experience of others, analyzing political and cultural paradigms, and finding the common ground that can support collective action for the common good

On January 21, 2017, an estimated 3 million or more people said 'Yes,' to democratic values as they joined the “Women’s March” in hundreds of cities and towns across the United States and around the World.  Signs carried by marchers conveyed their reaction to the violation of treasured values. A year after the 2016 election, thousands of people are still showing up for demonstrations to uphold these values.  Others are organizing to have an impact on the 2018 elections.  Some are still wondering how we can have civil civic conversations.

If you also see the importance of this work for social change, please help fund the project -  book,  web-based training material, and workshops.
