Stick by stick let's build our nest

The dining room and kitchen are the heart of Ligzda Latvian Center (Zion Latvian church property in Chicago). Memories of pancake breakfasts, baking ginger snaps and sharing “piragi”, as well as church fellowship, committee meetings, graduation parties and friendly conversations populate the space. We have embarked on a renovation project to provide a modern, refreshed environment optimized for our community’s current and changing needs.

The kitchen and dining room renovation project at Ligzda, started last year, has been financed jointly by Krisjanis Barons Latvian School (KBLS), Chicago Latvian Association and the Latvian Zion Lutheran Church. We are turning to you for donations to help pay to complete the project (How to contribute? See end for instructions). The work to date has been achieved with thousands of volunteer hours along with hired tradesmen as needed. We are grateful to everyone who has helped along the way! Our opening for the new space was on November 19, 2022.

Kitchen & Dining Space Improvement Summary

• Re-designed commercial kitchen layout

• New stainless steel appliances and tables

• Ventilation and fire suppression system

• Removal of dropped ceiling to expose vaulted ceiling and added windows

• Modern light and plumbing fixtures

• Fresh paint, trim, and tile

• Upgraded plumbing and electrical

• Wood panel feature wall with TV

The scope of the renovation changed throughout the process to optimize space, improve safety and meet code requirements. These changes lead to increased expenses resulting in cost overruns. Project costs are estimated to total $127,496. We have received $77,315 in funding, netting a deficit of ($50,181).

Fortunately, we have received an anonymous offer to match donations. For every dollar you contribute, our donor will match your donation. We need your help to raise $25,091 to finish this project. If we exceed our goal, we will continue to improve the space with new window coverings, and chairs and tables.

With your donation, your name will be added to a plaque featuring all contributors to this project. Please donate what you are able- every dollar will help. For example, $25 will cover the cost of a box of tiles, $100 will cover the cost of a new light fixture, $500 will cover the cost of a new window, $1000 will cover the cost of a new fridge, $5000 will cover the cost of the new stove or $10,000 will help cover the cost for the electrical work.
