Terug naar mijn roots
In maart ga ik naar Indonesië, voor een reis die voor mij heel persoonlijk voelt: een reis terug naar mijn roots.
Mijn opa en oma zijn in voormalig Nederlands-Indië geboren, en het stond al jaren op mijn bucketlist om de eilanden waar mijn roots liggen te bezoeken. Ik ben zo blij dat het eindelijk gaat gebeuren!
De plekken die ik wil bezoeken:
- Jakarta (voorheen Batavia), eiland Java – waar mijn oma Tine (Christine Picauly) is geboren
- Semarang, eiland Java – geboorteplaats van haar moeder Andeen Kwakoe
- Nolloth, eiland Saparua – geboorteplaats van haar vader Willem Alexander Picauly en opa Moses Picauly
- Ameth, eiland Nusa Laut – het dorp waar de familienaam Picauly vandaan komt. Op de Molukken kan je vaak aan een achternaam zien uit welk dorp een familie oorspronkelijk komt.
- Eiland Ambon – waar mijn opa Cor (Cornelis Knoester) is geboren
- Amahai, eiland Seram – geboorteplaats van zijn moeder Geertruida Tamaela
Onderwijs
Onderwijs speelt al langere tijd een belangrijke rol in de familiegeschiedenis van de Molukken. Een van mijn voorouders, Jacob Picaulij (ca. 1810–1880) uit het dorp Ameth op Nusa Laut, was een van de eerste leerlingen van het Instituut voor Inlandse Onderwijzers in Ambon. Hij werd later ondermeester en hielp tientallen toekomstige onderwijzers op te leiden, die verspreid werden over de Ambonse eilanden, Seram en zelfs meer afgelegen eilanden.
Dat maakt het extra bijzonder om deze reis te koppelen aan het steunen van een school. Daarom wil ik geld inzamelen voor een school op Ambon, het eiland waar mijn opa Cor is geboren.
Stichting Rit & Rock voor De Molukken:
Dit doe ik via Stichting RRVDM , een organisatie die samenwerkt met lokale ambassadeurs en zorgvuldig onderzoekt welke scholen de hulp echt nodig hebben. Ze kijken onder andere:
- of de school al steun krijgt van de overheid
- of er al hulp is van andere organisaties
- of het gevraagde bedrag realistisch is
- of de materialen echt nodig zijn
Met ongeveer €500 kan één school voorzien worden van nieuw lesmateriaal voor zo’n 50 kinderen. Mijn doel is om één, en hopelijk twee, scholen te kunnen helpen — afhankelijk van de donaties.

Back to the Roots
In March, I am traveling to Indonesia for a trip that feels very personal to me: a journey back to my roots.
My grandparents were born in the former Dutch East Indies, and for years it has been on my bucket list to visit the islands where my roots lie. I’m so happy it’s finally happening!
The places I plan to visit:
- Jakarta (previously Batavia), Java – where my grandmother Tine (Christine Picauly) was born
- Semarang, Java – birthplace of her mother Andeen Kwakoe
- Nolloth, Saparua Island – birthplace of her father Willem Alexander Picauly and grandfather Moses Picauly
- Ameth, Nusa Laut Island – the village where the family name Picauly comes from. In the Moluccas, you can often tell from a last name which village a family originally comes from.
- Ambon Island – where my grandfather Cor (Cornelis Knoester) was born
- Amahai, Seram Island – birthplace of his mother Geertruida Tamaela
Education
Education has long played an important role in the family history on the Moluccas. Members of the Picauly family, from my grandmother’s side, have historically been involved in teaching. One notable figure with the Picauly name, Jacob Picaulij (c. 1810–1880) from the village of Ameth on Nusa Laut, was among the first students at the Institute for Indigenous Teachers in Ambon. He later became an assistant teacher and helped train dozens of future teachers, who were then placed across the Ambonese islands, Seram, and even more remote islands.
This makes it especially meaningful to connect this trip with supporting a school. That’s why I want to raise money for a school on Ambon, the island where my grandfather was born.
NGO Rick Rock voor De Molukken:
I am doing this through the NGO RRVDM , an organization that works with local ambassadors and carefully investigates which schools truly need help. They look at, among other things:
- whether the school already receives government support
- whether there is already help from other organizations
- whether the requested amount is realistic
- whether the materials are truly needed
- and whether the school will still be operating in two years
With around €500, one school can be provided with new teaching materials for about 50 children. My goal is to help one, and hopefully two, schools, depending on donations.
