Step It Up DC

Help me bring food to struggling families Washington, D.C. through “Step It Up”

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a hard year for so many families.

As the year draws to a close, many parents are finding it harder every day to put food on the table as their jobs disappear and their pockets are empty. For example, here in Washington, D.C., our rising unemployment rate this fall is now at 8.6 percent. That number seems to get higher every day. Without jobs, it becomes impossible to pay for food. The consequence of this is increasing hunger.
This rising hunger is especially hard on children! Right now, one out of every five kids in the district can’t eat three meals a day because their parents are out of work.  Imagine, on top of all the worry and uncertainty about the pandemic, being constantly hungry! As this crisis worsens, experts are projecting that people facing hunger in the D.C. metro area will need $56,189 per year to meet their food needs.*

I strongly believe in the power of small actions to create positive ripples across our community. I am not a part of any organization. I’m a travel and lifestyle blogger, student and local resident with a heart for helping people down on their luck during these traumatic times.

My vision is to play a small part in lightening the burden of families trying to buy food when money is scarce. To do this, I am raising money to supply 100 parcels of food to families in need in the Washington D.C. area. Through my “Step It Up” campaign, I aim to raise $10,000. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be strictly used to purchase food to be donated to local families.

Once the funds have been raised, I will assemble a team of local volunteers to shop for the food and put together parcels. We will then distribute the parcels for free to local families experiencing financial hardship on November 15. We plan to stand outdoors at a location yet to be determined and have people come get their parcels, no questions asked.

I am inviting other compassionate souls everywhere to join me as I work to reach this goal!

Your donation of any size is greatly appreciated and can be made securely with a credit card on this page. I am more than happy to thank my donors publicly on this page and on my Instagram account to show appreciation of your generous donation.

For the sake of accountability, I will be providing the financials of this project in a blog post on my website at https://liizroaa.wixsite.com/travelinglizard.

Donors can view my progress with this project by following an Instagram account created for this project. https://www.instagram.com/stepitupdc

If you can’t donate at this time, you can still help my cause! Please share this campaign with your friends and family and post the page link directly to your social media pages. If enough people are moved to share this story, I will be able to raise the funds to help feed as many struggling D.C. area families as I can in this difficult time.

******Food item donations and volunteers are welcome. Feel free to reach out. ******

Thank you in advance for “stepping up” to help hungry people in Washington, D.C.!
