Nalini's STEM Expedition to Malawi
Donation protected
As part of a team of 22 women engineers working within the UK and around Asia Pacific, I am undertaking an Orbis Expedition to Malawi in May 2019 to design and construct a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classroom block at Rainbow Hope Secondary School .
Rainbow Hope Secondary School was opened in 2017 and educates girls and boys from the surrounding community. The school is operated by Community Initiative for Self Reliance (CISER), a local NGO based in Mangochi. The school was established to compliment CISER's efforts under School Sponsorship Program, through which it offers scholarly support to orphans and vulnerable children. Rainbow Hope currently has a total of 124 students. We hope that this new classroom block will allow them to expand the number of pupils as well as provide much needed STEM educational resources to help in the education of these Malawi children.
Design work begins ahead of the expedition and I am lending my time, technical experience in planning, design and construction in partnership with the local community. With the right opportunities anyone is capable of excelling in STEM careers and young people throughout the world need the skills and knowledge STEM provides to address problems within their communities. I am also designing and will be delivering hands-on STEM activities to engage the students during the expedition.
The total personal cost of the expedition is £4,210. I am funding my visa, insurance, flights and vaccinations which sums up to £1,715 from my personal savings and I am seeking your financial support towards my ambitions to raise £2,495.00. £1,995 will cover the expedition fee (meals, accommodation and transportation within Malawi). The balance of the money raised which is 20% (£500) will be donated to the school for activities and community projects.
Your financial support will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for your support.
