Start-Up Costs for the Student Justice League

Help train students to advocate on behalf of people in prison.

The Student Justice League was founded this past year by David, a formerly incarcerated man and experienced advocate, and me, a Barnard College graduate and aspiring advocate. Together, we have been building the organizational foundation and team to train Columbia and Barnard students to file Administrative Remedies, the internal grievance report in federal prisons, in order to advocate on behalf of incarcerated people who are experiencing violations of their rights. Though rarely used, and even more rarely effective due to the dangerous power dynamics within prisons, the Administrative Remedy process allows an incarcerated citizen to file a grievance about their inhumane treatment and requires staff to address the complaint.

The Student Justice League seeks to harness the power of the Administrative Remedy process from the outside to defend people on the inside. David developed the idea for SJL during his ten-year term in federal prison, where he mastered the Administrative Remedy and also witnessed the glaring need for more accountability, direct advocacy, and outside attention in the prison system. We met last year in an English class sponsored by the Columbia Center for Justice and teamed up to bring David's vision to life.

The Student Justice League’s mission is to train and embolden college students to combat human rights violations in U.S. prisons. To accomplish this goal, student members of SJL are trained by returning citizens in the art of filing Administrative Remedies on behalf of incarcerated folks. The Student Justice League expects its student members to harness their privilege and education for the purpose of holding U.S. prison staff accountable, demanding a departure from the violent and punitive nature of prison administrations, combating injustice, and restoring humanity in an inhumane system.

This September, we plan to recruit and train a new class of student volunteers at Columbia University and launch our pilot program in New York City— and we need your help. Your generously donated funds will be used to help us create and maintain our new virtual training and launch our pilot program.

With your financial assistance, from as little as $150 to $15,000 or more, we will be able to obtain a professional Zoom account for our trainings and administrative meetings; pay for website hosting cost; purchase a professional printer/copier/scanner along with office supplies; acquire a quality camera, microphone and other equipment for the purpose of producing training videos; and cover postage fees which are very important for us to be effective in our goal.

Every little bit helps! Donate what you can and spread the word.
