Xiaozhou Zhu and I will be going up to Standing Rock, North Dakota during Thanksgiving to the DAPL resistance group campsite where many are protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
For those who don't know, the Dakota Access Pipeline, also known as DAPL or Bakken Pipeline, is an underground oil pipeline that is planned to extend from North Dakota to Illinois. It will also pass through South Dakota and Iowa.
The pipeline is controversial for many reasons, but mainly because it is passing through Native American land and poses a potential threat to water contamination for those in surrounding areas. More than 200 pipeline related leaks happened in the past two years around the world, and the environmental damage costs by those leaks are devastating. The pipeline was initially to pass northeast of Bismarck, ND (nonnative land) but was rerouted through Standing Rock due to oppositions by locals for fear of water contamination.
The rerouting of DAPL through Standing Rock violates The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 that guaranteed complete and total undisturbed access, of the land to the Great Sioux Nation of the Oceti Sakowin.
Police have infiltrated the area and are using brute force against those in opposition to the building of DAPL.
Xiao and I will set up a full kitchen. We will be providing meals to those who are participating in the protests, natives, press, and those helping build camp infrastructures to sustain the opposition.
Xiao recently went up to Standing Rock and was able to provide meals for many, but resources were slim. On the next visit we hope to provide as many free meals as possible during our stay to those doing their part in maintaining the opposition.
The money we receive from this GoFundMe will help us to purchase food and supplies for those at Standing Rock.
If you are unable to donate monetarily, there are other ways you can help. Firstly, you can share this post. Secondly, Xiao and I will be accepting donations of canned, nonperishable goods, as well as, blankets and warm clothes. Please message me for the full list of the items that are in urgent need.
