A routine traffic stop turned our lives upside down. We’re raising funds to repay the $15,000 bond that freed my husband and to move forward with his immigration case.

On September 12, my husband Rhoshaun and his friend—both Jamaican—were traveling from Chicago to Ohio when they were pulled over by the Indiana highway patrol. After extensive questioning, they were instructed to follow officers to a weigh station. When they arrived, they encountered an ICE operation that was detaining multiple people, and both men were taken into custody.

After being unnecessarily questioned, they were told to follow the officers to a nearby weigh station. When they arrived, they realized it was a trap set by ICE, where multiple people were being detained. Both my husband and his friend were taken into custody.

Rhoshaun spent five difficult days at the Broadview, IL ICE Holding Center, where conditions were heartbreaking. He and others were forced to sleep on the floor, given only two basic sandwiches a day, and provided with aluminum blankets in freezing temperatures. They were not allowed to change clothes or use proper toiletries.

After this, he was transferred to Michigan, where he remained for several more weeks. During that time, we were forced to spend our first wedding anniversary (September 22) apart—a painful experience for both of us as newlyweds. After 24 long days in detention, Rhoshaun was finally offered release on a $15,000 bond.

Although we had begun the process for the green card about 10 months ago, unfortunately, we later discovered that the attorney we hired never filed our paperwork, despite assuring us that everything was being handled. Because of her negligence, his legal status became vulnerable without our knowledge.

We’ve since hired a new immigration attorney who is helping us get everything back on track the right way.

God miraculously opened a door for someone to loan us the $15,000 bond, but that amount must be repaid soon. In addition, we must cover new legal and filing fees, and we have yet to receive the full refund from our previous attorney’s retainer. With only one income, I am doing everything I can to keep up with family expenses, legal costs, and immigration fees.

We know that God is faithful, and even in this difficult season, we’ve seen His hand open doors and surround us with caring people. We are believing for full restoration and victory through His grace.
