Yvette Jones Swanson: A Journey of Resilience and Hope

At just 18, Yvette Jones Swanson took a bold step that would shape her life forever by enlisting in the Army. With dreams of serving her country and making a difference, she faced a harsh reality that would haunt her for years: Military Sexual Trauma (MST). This traumatic experience marked the beginning of a long and arduous journey filled with challenges that many veterans face, yet few truly understand.

Returning home, Yvette sought solace in the arms of a Marine, believing that love would shield her from the horrors of her past. They married, but what began as a promising chapter quickly turned into a nightmare of physical abuse. Trapped in a cycle of violence, Yvette found herself homeless, navigating the complexities of life on the streets. With nowhere to turn, she sought help from the VA, only to be met with indifference and rejection time and time again.

Homelessness became her reality as she lived in her car, finding temporary refuge on the couches of friends and family who were often at a loss for how to help. The stigma surrounding her experiences pushed her further into isolation, but Yvette’s spirit remained unbroken. Determined to forge a new path, she enrolled in college, and against all odds, she graduated. The day she landed a job with the City of Chicago was a turning point, though it came with its own struggles—she spent three weeks living in her car until she received her first paycheck.

Life as a young female veteran was fraught with challenges, but Yvette’s resilience shone through in the darkest of times. Today, as she celebrates her 60th birthday, she chooses to transform her pain into purpose. Yvette is raising awareness about the critical issues of military sexual trauma, domestic violence, and homelessness within the veteran community. This milestone is not just a personal celebration; it’s a rallying cry for change.

With your support, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to charities dedicated to these urgent causes—organizations that continue to provide resources and support to those who have faced similar struggles. By contributing to this GoFundMe, you are not only celebrating Yvette’s journey but also taking a stand against the injustices that many veterans still face today.

Join Yvette in her mission to bring light to these issues that often remain in the shadows. Your donation, no matter the size, can make a difference. Together, we can foster awareness, support healing, and build a community that stands for those who served. Please donate and share this campaign to spread the word. Let’s honor Yvette’s journey and work toward a brighter future for all veterans.
