Stand with Us to Save Glenbard's Hill
Donation protected
Among the most regarded landmarks in Glen Ellyn is the beautiful and historical hill that Glenbard West high school sits atop of. The hill features oak trees that are at least 100 years old, as well as a victory bell that graduating seniors and victorious sports teams ring in celebration. It also features seating for students overlooking beautiful Lake Ellyn and a waterfall donated by a previous class as a gift.
A District 87 referendum passed by a few hundred votes (but was rejected by Glen Ellyn residents living North of Roosevelt road) effectively destroys the hill and its historical features, including chopping down countless Oak Trees. The original design plan, which was buried in the depths of the District 87 website, has now grown exponentially to propose a complete annihilation of the hill in favor of a four story atrium and additional classroom space, which is seen as unneeded by many who believe this is likely a byproduct of the recent change to block scheduling. Block scheduling in other states has been proven to be ineffective. What happens when this initiative inevitably gets abandoned? We will now have destroyed a historical landmark for classroom space that will start to collect dust.
The village of Glen Ellyn ultimately approved 8 variances (meaning D87 was asking for 8 changes to the village building codes). In an unusual omission of input, the village skipped the feedback of the environmental commission and ignored the pleas of hundreds of residents at a recent board meeting. The village trustees did not do an adequate job explaining to the community why they allowed the hardships for the 8 variances. In fact, the village trustees in favor of the plan NEVER explained the reasoning behind approving the hardships regarding the variances at all.
The proceeds of this GoFundMe will be used to take legal action in hopes of stopping the project and forcing them to go back to the drawing board. Any donation will help our cause. If you can not donate, please consider sharing. Thank you.
