Stand With the Families Left Behind After Evanston ICE Raid

If you are on social media and live near Evanston, IL, you may have seen this notice:

That morning, three men hugged their families goodbye and went to Evanston's Home Depot to look for work - knowing it was dangerous - but also knowing their families needed them. Two were abducted, and one narrowly escaped.

These families lost their sole breadwinners: two are currently in ICE detention waiting for help, and the workman who was able to escape is now unable to work or leave his home from fear of abduction.

Without the ability to work and earn money, these families are facing extreme hardship - and our hardworking social safety net is stretched beyond capacity. Even though these families now have no income, they still have rent, utilities and groceries to pay for...and now, possibly legal fees.

I know many of us feel helpless as we watch our hardworking neighbors, who were struggling before the unprecedented acts of violence from our Federal government, now face violence, abduction, and daily terror.

Esa mañana, tres hombres se despidieron de sus familias y fueron al Home Depot de Evanston en busca de trabajo, sabiendo que era peligroso, pero también conscientes de que sus familias los necesitaban. Dos fueron secuestrados, y uno logró escapar por poco.

Estas familias perdieron a sus únicos proveedores: dos se encuentran actualmente detenidos por ICE esperando ayuda, y el trabajador que logró escapar ahora no puede trabajar ni salir de su casa por miedo a ser secuestrado.

Sin la posibilidad de trabajar y ganar dinero, estas familias enfrentan dificultades extremas - y nuestra red de seguridad social está sobrepasada. Aunque estas familias ahora no tengan ingresos, todavía deben pagar renta, servicios y alimentos... y ahora, posiblemente, honorarios legales.

Sé que muchos de nosotros nos sentimos impotentes al ver a nuestros vecinos trabajadores, que ya estaban luchando antes de los actos de violencia sin precedentes de nuestro gobierno federal, enfrentar ahora la violencia, el secuestro y el terror diario.
