On Monday, January 19th, 2026, tragedy struck when a three-alarm fire broke out in a multi-unit residential and retail building on 19th & Broadway in Downtown Oakland. Thankfully, through quick action and with a heroic effort on the part of the Oakland Fire Department, all residents made it out of the building. Some had to be treated for smoke inhalation. In the coming weeks, the residents will have the heartbreaking task of trying to rebuild after such a devastating loss of their homes.

Among those impacted by this horrible fire was Oakland’s beloved community leader, hip-hop artist, and entrepreneur Mistah F.A.B. whose clothing store, Dope Era, is housed on the first floor of the building where the fire broke out. The Dope Era store is one of Oakland’s flagship, local Black-owned businesses; and it has become a cultural hub and a community gathering space. The fire and the subsequent firefight left extensive water damage to the Dope Era store and to the merchandise housed within. Currently, the insurance company has notified the business that they will not be honoring the insurance policy, leaving this local business stranded.

F.A.B. and his team have done so much good community work throughout the city of Oakland, hosting annual back-to-school and holiday giveaways for underserved children and families for decades in the North Oakland community where he grew up. He is a beacon of hope in Oakland.

We are a group of community leaders who have been supported by Mistah F.A.B’s community contributions for over two decades. F.A.B. loves Oakland and the Bay Area deeply. He has shown up for the youth of our city, for Oakland, and for the wider Bay Area community - with his time, his love, and his own resources. We took the initiative to launch this fundraiser on his behalf (with his consent) to ease the financial burden brought on by this sudden tragedy.

The road ahead for the Dope Era store will be challenging. There will be considerable costs due to cleanup, damaged inventory, loss of income for employees and the business, potential relocation, etc. We are asking you to stand with us in donating to help make his bounce back quicker at a time when we are losing so many of our local and Black-owned businesses. Let’s show him the love he has shown so many of us! Thank you for your support!!

*Funds raised will go directly to Dope Era and Mistah F.A.B.
