Our dear friend María is going through a very difficult time, and even though she doesn’t want to ask for help (because that’s just who she is, strong, proud, and always thinking about everyone else before herself), we feel we have to do it for her.

María is the heart of our group, the life of the party. She’s that person who’s always smiling, who walks in with her big “goooood morniiiing!” (or her signature “buenassss”) and instantly makes us feel like everything’s better now that she’s here. She always has a joke ready to lift our spirits and can turn any ordinary gathering into a celebration. Her joy, her kindness, and her unique way of seeing life have been with us through the best and hardest times since she became part of our little family here in this country.

A few days ago, she was detained by ICE and is now waiting for a court hearing with a judge in about 10 days. She needs a lawyer to represent her, and the cost we were quoted is $5,000. We know that’s a lot of money, but we also know that together, we can make it happen.

María has always been there for all of us, never asking for anything in return. Now it’s our turn to be there for her. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to giving her a fair chance and keeping alive the hope that she can continue her life here, with us, her chosen family.

Nuestra querida amiga María está pasando por un momento muy difícil, y aunque ella no quiere pedir ayuda (porque así es ella: fuerte, orgullosa y siempre pensando solo en los demás y no en ella), tenemos que hacerlo por ella.

María es el alma de nuestro grupo (el alma de la fiesta), es esa persona que siempre está sonriendo, que desde que llega a donde estemos con su buennaaassss nos hace sentir que ya esta ahi con nosotros, que tiene un chiste listo para levantar el ánimo, que convierte cualquier reunión en una fiesta. Su alegría, su humanidad y su forma tan única de ver la vida nos han acompañado en los mejores y peores momentos desde que hace parte de nuestro grupo aquí en este pais.

En estos dias fue detenida por el ICE y ahora está esperando una audiencia con un juez en 10 dias. Necesita un abogado que la represente, y el costo del que cotizamos es de $5,000 dólares. Sabemos que es mucho dinero, pero también sabemos que entre todos podemos lograrlo.

Ella ha estado siempre para nosotros, sin pedir nada a cambio. Ahora nos toca a nosotros estar ahí por ella. Cada aporte, por pequeño que sea, nos acerca un paso más a darle la oportunidad de tener una defensa justa y mantener viva la esperanza de seguir su vida aquí, con nosotros, su familia elegida.
