PROPOSED GRAVEL PIT THREATENS LONG LAKE TOWNSHIP
Milestone Materials has applied to Washburn County for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for a gravel mining operation at N329 Lakken Road, Sarona.
The CUP application was opposed by the Town of Long Lake Planning Commission 6-0 and the Town Board 3-0. The Town determined the mine would be incompatible with surrounding property uses and the environment and would conflict with the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. Unfortunately, the County Zoning Committee ignored the overwhelming opposition to the CUP by the residents of the Town and approved the application. We are now appealing against this decision.
We are your friends and neighbors who have created an unincorporated nonprofit association dedicated to maintaining our rural and peaceful quality of life. We oppose the Zoning Committee’s approval of the Conditional Use Permit “CUP” for the gravel pit.
The proposed gravel pit is considered an industrial use and will negatively impact surrounding property values and tax base. We are concerned for the environment, including potential for groundwater contamination, safety concerns because of increased truck traffic, road deterioration, and most importantly, the quality of life which residents of the Town treasure. If this proposed gravel pit is approved, similar pits could be built near your home.
