A lion of New York City’s tenant movement, Fidele Albert, urgently needs our support
If you have been involved in the tenant movement over the last half decade, you have almost certainly met Fidele Albert. She is one of our most tireless leaders and organizers. There is hardly a meeting with new tenants, a rally outside of a building or landlord’s house, a day of action in Albany or a morning of court support in the Brooklyn’s eviction mill where she is not a fiery fixture–informing people of their rights, connecting them to organizations, exhorting them to fight, and demonstrating the courage that self-advocacy requires. Thousands of people have been positively touched by Fidele’s sacrifices for our movement–now, we need to lend her the same support.
After four years of fighting for her housing rights, Fidele was ordered by a housing court judge to vacate the apartment that she called home for many years by November 24, 2024. Fidele has been subject to harassment by the landlord and roommate, physical abuse by the roommate, illegal suspension of the electricity, and been locked out of common areas, leaving her unable to utilize the kitchen, stove, refrigerator, and the washroom. Being barred from accessing necessities in her own home has created some medical issues in the process, and the situation has caused deep and painful distress for Fidele.
We are joining Fidele in legal challenges and appeals to this ruling, and in leveraging tenant movement power to extend her time in her apartment. But she also very much needs our financial support. As a powerful leader, who has helped and brought many into the tenant movement, Fidele should not be left without a home; she should not be left alone and dispossessed while tirelessly extending herself to the movement.
As a result of this terrible ruling, we are raising funds to ease her transition to a safe, affordable, and solo apartment in New York City. Time is of the essence, and every dollar counts.
Please donate, share, and pass the hat with your neighbors and fellow organizers, whether you’ve leaned on Fidele directly or not.
