During the NFL Wild Card game, Azeez Al-Shaair, linebacker for the Houston Texans, was fined $11,593 for wearing eye black with the message “stop the genocide.”

The fine wasn’t related to unsportsmanlike conduct, performance-enhancing equipment, or disrespect toward the game. It was issued solely because the message was deemed a “personal statement” under National Football League uniform rules.

Azeez has been clear and consistent in how he uses his platform: to advocate for humanitarian causes and to bring attention to the suffering of innocent civilians. He has previously supported Palestinian humanitarian efforts through the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats program and has spoken openly about wanting to use his visibility to bring hope to families affected by war.
