I’m a mom to two boys, Jonathon and Kayden.

Mike was not just my fiancé. He was my best friend, my safe place, and the man my children loved deeply. We were building a life together — a home filled with plans, routines, and love. Losing him didn’t just break my heart; it dismantled the world my children knew as home.

One month ago, my boys and I watched my fiancé — the man we love — die in front of us in our home.

He collapsed in our home, and within minutes everything became fear, panic, and heartbreak. He told me he loved me. I told him I loved him too. Those were our last words to each other.

Paramedics arrived, and just two minutes later, he was gone. A large pulmonary embolism took him from us.

We were supposed to spend the rest of our lives together — instead, he spent the rest of his life with me.

My children witnessed something no child should ever have to see. From that moment on, their world — and mine — was shattered. Grief didn’t end when the ambulance left. It followed us into every moment afterward.

Since Mike’s passing, everything we knew has unraveled. Because we were not legally married, my children and I lost not only Mike, but the stability of the home we built together. In the midst of shock and grief, we were suddenly facing the possibility of losing everything familiar at once.

We were told we needed to move out of the home we shared with Mike. Overnight, I went from a two-income household to one. I work at an elementary school — a job I love — but it does not come close to covering the financial reality of losing a partner, a home, and stability all at once.

It is about survival.

It is about finding safe housing for me, my boys, and our puppy.
