Hello! We are the St. Louis Urbanists. We believe in a St. Louis where every sidewalk is safe, every bus stop is accessible, and every neighborhood thrives. For too long, our city's infrastructure and urban design have prioritized cars over people, leading to less walkable communities, less reliable transit, and a disconnect between residents and their city. But we're changing that, one street, one bench, one conversation at a time.
What We Do:
STL Urbanists isn't just about talking about change; we're about making it happen. Here’s how we’re working to build a better St. Louis:
- Advocacy & Policy: We actively engage with city officials, attend public hearings, and organize letter-writing campaigns to advocate for safer streets, improved transit, and making housing more affordable.
- Tactical Urbanism: We’ve built and deployed over 50 bus-stop benches, and we’re actively working on new projects but need your help. From building and deploying bus stop benches to picking up trash, we implement small, immediate changes that demonstrate what's possible and inspire larger transformations.
- Data & Mapping: We’ve created a number of data visualizations to identify critical urban challenges – transit gaps, vacant land, pedestrian safety – and visualize solutions, providing compelling evidence for policy change.
- Traffic Violence Awareness: We’ve organized a number of protests in response to incidents of traffic violence, and we’re actively campaigning with direct actions and calls to officials to demand safer street designs for all.
Why We Need Your Help (Our Organizational Needs):
As a volunteer-led, grassroots organization, every dollar goes directly into empowering our work. To sustain and grow our impact, we need to fund essential organizational needs that keep us running. Your support will help us:
- Acquire Tactical Urbanism Supplies: Each bench we build costs over $40 to build and maintain. Supplies for other community-driven tactical projects can be even more expensive.
- Fund Community Outreach & Events: Covering costs for meeting spaces, printing educational materials, and organizing public forums, book clubs, and social gatherings.
- Maintain Our Digital Infrastructure: Ensuring our website, communication tools, and membership platforms are robust and accessible for all our volunteers and community members.
- Cover Administrative Essentials: Basic operational costs that ensure we can continue our vital work day-to-day.
