Running for my beautiful Mam Colette – My First Half Marathon for St. Francis Hospice
This year marks 10 years since we lost my beautiful Mammy, Colette — and to honour her memory, I've decided (in a moment of madness and motivation!) to run my very first HALF marathon on 5th July 2025. Yep, 13.1 miles… and I’m not exactly known for my athletic grace. But hey, we all have to start somewhere!
And I won’t be doing it alone — my old school pal Michelle Kelly has bravely (or foolishly!) signed up to run it with me. Mam always said she was full of mischief — and she was right! So it feels extra special to have her by my side for this.
For those who knew my Mam, you’ll understand why this is so important to me. Colette was the kind of person who made you feel seen, heard, and loved — the warmest heart with the brightest smile. A gifted hairdresser, she volunteered each Mother’s Day at St. Francis Hospice in Raheny, lovingly doing patients’ hair to make them feel special and cared for. It was just her way — always giving, always gentle, never judging.
She was only 61 when she passed, far too soon for someone so full of life and love. In her final weeks, St. Francis Hospice wrapped us all in kindness. They didn’t just care for Mam — they carried us, too. With dignity, compassion, humour, and warmth, they became part of our family during the hardest time of our lives.
So now, I’m lacing up my runners (begrudgingly, if I’m honest) to give something back to the incredible people who gave us so much. I’d be so grateful for any support — big or small — to help me hit my fundraising goal and get me over that finish line (and maybe even enjoy it a little!).
We'll be doing this for Colette and all our loved ones — and for all the families St. Francis Hospice continues to care for every day.
Lots of love,
Ann & Michelle xxx
