My name is Yessheka. I have lived in the UK for several years; however, I am originally from Jamaica and am currently residing in the UK.
I was raised in a parish in Jamaica called St. Elizabeth. Before moving to the UK, I attended Black River Primary School and was born at Black River Hospital. I have a strong network of family and friends in the St. Elizabeth community, which has recently been impacted by Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane at around 1 p.m. ET yesterday, marking the most powerful hurricane in the island's recorded history. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared the country a disaster area, with reports indicating that St. Elizabeth Parish is currently "underwater."
As a result of this hurricane, my family and friends have lost their homes, roofs, personal belongings, and important documents, forcing them to start over due to the severe impact of the hurricane. There are limited food supplies and shortages in the area at present.
Consequently, the funds raised will help me support my community where I grew up, with their accommodation roofs and parts of the buildings affected, to rebuild attractions that tourists enjoy visiting, such as the Black River Crocodile Safari, primary school, church, shops, and residences within the parish.
Urgent Emergency Requirements
Financial resources can be allocated to assist families with essential needs immediately following a disaster, including:
• Temporary accommodation or hotel lodging
• Emergency food supplies and potable water
• Apparel and blankets
• Healthcare services and Home and Property Restoration Monetary aid may facilitate:
• Repairing or reconstructing damaged residences
• Acquiring construction materials
• Clearing debris and removing mold
• Replacing vital household items (furniture, appliances, tools)
In November 2025, I had originally planned a trip to Jamaica; however, my itinerary remains unchanged as the ticket has already been purchased. Therefore, due to the significant impact of this hurricane, the purpose of this trip is now to support the affected community in Jamaica.
In many other areas, it will take time for them to return to normal as they are currently without electricity, and this may take months or longer.
The funds will aid the community in St. Elizabeth in restoring lives , as many have lost their homes, personal possessions, schools, hospitals, and police stations within the community.
