What's Happening in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is on the brink of collapse, facing the worst financial crisis since its Independence in 1948 .
The country has no foreign currency to pay for imports , including food, fuel, and essentials. There have been power cuts going up to 13 hours a day; hospitals have been suspending routine surgeries because of no power and no medicine; school exams have been canceled because there is no paper to print the exams on; massive queues for petrol and gas (that most people use to cook); just to name a few.
This is primarily due to bad governance and corruption and left thousands unable to purchase essentials items with absolutely no reprieve in sight.
To make matters worse, the government has invoked a state of emergency and used violence and social media blackouts to create fear and stifle dissent.
How can I help?
Our privilege allows us to sit here and read about this crisis rather than endure the suffering directly.
I've created this Gofundme to make it easier for those overseas to donate, so please help by donating & spreading the word.
With the current state of the rupee, every $ will go a long way. $5 can provide three meals for a family. So no amount is too small to make a difference.
Where does my donation go?
Sadly, given the crisis's nature and government interference, there is almost no global aid or funding.
However, Sri Lankans' nature of generosity and kindness has always come through times like this, with many individuals and small organizations coming together to help each other out.
I've worked with my sister Sharanya, based in Sri Lanka, who has access to a vast network as an activist in the non-for-profit space to help identify local organisations and distribute funds.

How will you distribute funds?
The funds will be received into my Australian account and then sent to Sharanya's local Sri Lankan bank account (One account to limit conversion fees).
She will then be distributed funds to the mentioned organizations on an equal and need basis, with any excess funds distributed to others identified.
All receipts and updates will be posted on this page regularly to provide complete transparency on funds collected and distributed.
