Thank you for your continuous support throughout my medical school journey. As you may know, I am ONE month shy of obtaining my doctorate degree in medicine at Ross University School of Medicine! I have strong interests in primary care and international medicine. My goals are to become a family physician to impact the lives of the underprivileged and disadvantaged and establish health clinics locally and in Nigeria. As a first generation Nigerian American and 1st generation American citizen, I am no stranger to underserved populations. When I learned that my grandfather passed away in Abia State, Nigeria due to asthma complications, it was then I truly realized that there were several gaps in the health system in other parts of the world. This occurrence stimulated a drive in me to obtain a medical degree so that I may be able to render medical services to those in need.
Recently, I have been accepted into the Botswana-UPenn Partnership program. I will be traveling to Botswana from September 2016- April 2017. I will be returning to the states from November-December for residency program interviews. The purpose of this international program is to institute mobile health initiatives in Botswana, particularly in the field of mobile telemedicine. Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications such as two-way video, email, smart phones, and wireless tools to improve a patient’s clinical health status. As a volunteer, I will be assisting with the development and implementation of mobile phone-based initiatives to provide rural practitioners’ access to specialists, medical education, public health interventions and more.
I am very excited about this opportunity because of the significant impact that I can have on providing more adequate and efficient healthcare to some of the developing parts of the world. Because this is an unfunded position, I am working to raise funds for this trip which are estimated to be $10,000. As you know, I am still a student and raising funds of this magnitude is a challenge- which I embrace wholeheartedly but for which I could use assistance. I would greatly appreciate any donations to help sponsor me with my trip.
The breakdown of expenses can be found below:
-Airfare $4,400
-Accommodations $3,000
-Meals $1,000
-Living expenses $1,000
-Other expenses/ Emergency $1,000
Thank you in advance for your continuous support, encouragement and generosity!
