From Chains to Change: Help Free Temple Elephants from Suffering
A temple elephant was the reason our President, Seema Vaid envisioned and co-founded our nonprofit 'A Compassionate World'. Our Elephant Freedom campaign is a culmination of our resolve to make a tangible impact to alleviate the suffering of the gentle giants.
Across India, elephants are still used in temple rituals. Behind these ceremonies, many endure lives of quiet suffering. Some are taken from the wild as calves, torn from their families, chained, and trained through fear and physical pain. They spend years in confinement, standing for hours in the heat, denied the freedom and care they deserve.
These are intelligent, deeply emotional beings, and for many of them, that suffering begins young and lasts a lifetime.
It doesn't have to.
A kinder alternative already exists. Temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala are beginning to use lifelike robotic elephants in place of live ones, allowing sacred rituals to continue without cruelty. These robotic elephants preserve tradition, protect devotees and mahouts, and spare these innocent elephants from a life of captivity.
As some temple communities have already shown, this isn't a departure from devotion; it’s a deeper expression of it, rooted in the spirit of ahimsa (reduction of harm).
Our nonprofit, A Compassionate World, is raising $7,000 to sponsor a robotic elephant for temples across Kerala, India.
Every elephant deserves to live free. And through this fundraiser, we aim to make this a reality.
