As a primary school teacher with over 20 years of experience and a trained child bereavement counsellor, I’ve seen firsthand how essential it is to provide the right support during such a challenging time.

Throughout my teaching career in the Scottish Borders, I identified a significant gap in services for children experiencing grief. Sadly, due to funding cuts, many children no longer have access to the vital bereavement support they need to navigate their feelings of loss.

After earning my COSCA certificate qualification in bereavement counselling for children and young people, I worked as a bereavement counsellor in schools through a program supported by the Scottish Borders Council. But when that program ended, I felt compelled to take action.

I decided to create my own counselling service—a safe space for children to feel supported, understood, and guided through their grief. Having experienced bereavement as a child myself, I know how crucial it is to work through these emotions. It’s a process that helps build resilience and equips children with tools for life’s future challenges.

Since starting my practice, I’ve been approached by many people asking how they can contribute to help children who are unable to afford bereavement counselling. That’s why I’ve launched this fundraiser.

My goal is to raise enough funds to provide a six-week block of bereavement counselling for children who would otherwise be unable to access this support due to financial barriers. When we reach this goal, I will collaborate with local schools in the Scottish Borders to identify and fund a child who needs this essential care.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to offering a lifeline to a grieving child. Together, we can make sure no child has to navigate their grief alone.
