Hi everyone, my name is Odet and I have the awesome privilege to participate in a spinathon as part of an effort to raise funds for a dual purpose: Firstly, to support my missions trip to South Africa on 25th February 2025 and secondly, to support the superb care of the elderly residents of Marston Court Care Home.
Most of you already know that I am a Christian. I am a 2nd year Charis bible college student and I have this fantastic opportunity to participate in a missions trip to Cape Town, South Africa. During my trip, I will be part of a team, involved in addressing the spiritual, emotional and practical needs of vulnerable people facing very difficult circumstances. I will be involved in outreach work, potentially amongst the homeless, women fleeing domestic violence, as well as participating in children and youth work. I will be supporting local ministries/charities to bring hope by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and providing essential supplies to families and individuals facing poverty, discrimination and violent crimes, who feel hopeless and are desperate for change.
As well as being a bible college student, I also work as a carer at Marston Court, which is part of the Order of St John Care Trust. Marston Court offers compassionate, individualised, residential, early-stage dementia and care for up to 39 residents. I joined the team almost 2 years ago and I receive so much joy and job satisfaction from supporting residents to live their very best life. For me, it's not just about assisting individuals with their personal care and dietary needs, I enjoy interacting with them at a deeper level, showing genuine interest in the fascinating lives that many of them previously lived. I see my role as one who encourages and empowers individuals to live as full a life as possible. I believe in individuals maintaining their independence and having control over their lives for as long as possible. I have a special soft spot in my heart for those whose minds have been severely ravaged by dementia and have lost their ability to speak. I have often been amazed by specific individuals' ability to communicate through their body language, particularly via facial expressions. It is truly miraculous how resilient some of these wonderful people have become!
Why is the SA mission trip so important to me!
Often, people are generally concerned with issues, which directly impact their own personal lives. If I'm honest, that used to be my attitude. However, through the teachings I have received at Charis Bible College (CBC), I have developed a passion for reaching out to support people who, for whatever reason, are severely challenged and are experiencing all manner of difficulties and setbacks in their lives. I am no Mother Teresa, however, my Christian faith motivates me to not just focus on my own needs; instead, I am much more open to becoming the solution to the problems that so many people face all over the world!. I believe it is much more of a blessing to give back than to receive. This trip will be a life changing experience for me as much as a blessing to the people I have the privilege to offer care and support to gain control over their lives.
Why is Marston Court so important to me!
My journey as a carer began during the covid 19 pandemic in 2020. I never imagined I would ever become a carer. My circumstances were such that I actually responded to a flyer that was posted through my letter box. I thought I could earn a little easy money whilst attempting to establish a new business. Well, it turned out that I experienced a total change of my mindset regarding the role of a carer. To cut a long story short, I ditched the business to focus on caring for the elderly. I am so passionate about ensuring that the most vulnerable people in our community receive the maximum support possible, in order that they are able to fulfill their potential and achieve their individual aspirations. Just because a person is older and suffering from dementia, it doesn't mean they cannot/should not be given the opportunity to live a fulfilled life. I feel so blessed to be able to make a difference in the lives of the people we support at Marston Court. Although, there are a range of daily activities happening at Marston Court. there could be more options made available to our residents on a consistent basis, to aid healthy mind stimulation, social interaction and meaningful use of time.
How can you help?
I am completing a spinathon on Friday 21st February at Ferry Leisure Centre, OX2 7DP. The times are as follows:
6.00p.m to 6.55p.m, spin, followed by a 15 minute break
7.10p.m to 7.45p.m, spin, followed by a 15 minute break
8p.m to 8,45p.m, spin, FINISH
I would be thrilled to receive your support as I am put through my paces during an exciting, challenging and fabulously fun time. This is going to be a fantastic way to end the working week, whilst simultaneously raising funds for my SA missions trip and Marston Court.
If you would like to join me in this crazy fun time, or for some, crazy faith time, you will need to donate a minimum of £15 for the use of a bike. You will need to use your full name and send a screenshot of your payment made. This is a charitable cause, so the more you can donate the more that we can positively impact the lives of the people we aim to support. If spinning isn't your thing, you can still support me by making as generous a donation as you are able. Please note that I am not expecting anyone to give out of guilt or obligation. If you really would like to experience the satisfaction of giving to a good cause, then please give whatever you can! All donations will be used for the purpose of enhancing the lives of the vulnerable people we encounter in South Africa and the residents of Marston Court. Whatever money is raised will be split equally between both charitable causes. Your prayers for mine and my daughter's survival on the spinning bike would also be greatly appreciated!
Thank you all so much for your support. I look forward to providing positive feedback in the near future!
God bless!
