K-9 Liberty joined the South Padre Island Fire Department in April 2019. After completing a 200 hour training course & becoming certified with handler Ashley Bowen.
Each year billions of dollars in property damage and hundreds of lives are lost as a result of intentionally set fires. Accelerant detection canines- also known as Arson Dogs- are trained to sniff out minute traces of accelerants (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) that may have been used to start a fire. Due to these dogs keen sense of smell they have the ability to work a fire scene in about 20 minutes, that may normally take a fire investigator hours to locate the accelerants.
This dog is a part of a team that is comprised of the canine & handler. Not only will this team be used to investigate fires but they are responsible for providing community outreach programs & educational seminars on fire prevention & safety. The dog & handler are together 24/7.
We are very excited about adding this great program to our community. This program cannot run long term without continued grant funding & donations from generous people like you. The cost of acquiring the arson dog was covered, although we still have ongoing costs of dog food, routine veterinary services, training aids, training props, and the purchasing & outfitting of a vehicle for safe transport of our new 4 legged firefighter.
If you would like to help make this program a great success in our community please consider a donation today!
Thank you in advance for your generous support in making our communities a safer place to live & play.
