Spenser's Eagle Scout Project - Honoring Veterans

Spenser’s Eagle Scout Project

Hello, my name is Spenser Butrym. I am a Life Scout from Scouts BSA Troop 300 based in Howell, NJ. I am asking you to help fund my Eagle Scout Project. Due to covid-19, I can't do a normal bake sale fundraisers. Instead I have decided to use a GoFundMe for my project fundraising to help offset the costs.

What’s my Project about?

My project is about restoring the honor and respect to Civil War and Revolutionary War veterans buried in Jerseyville Cemetery, which has been neglected.  All donations to this project will go to help make sure that this cemetery with Civil and Revolutionary War Veterans buried there is not forgotten. The Civil War Veterans are from the New York infantry and artillery divisions, and the Revolutionary War Veterans most likely fought alongside George Washington at the Battle of Monmouth.

The donations will be used to buy lumber along with other materials to construct a new entry archway, and a message board to show some history of the cemetery and everyone known to be buried there. I am also looking to contract a professional sign company to create signage that will make it stand out from the road. Right now, it has a very small entryway that is now leaning precariously with tiny letters that are not legible from the road. The last time Jerseyville cemetery was updated was by an unidentified veterans group in the 1980s. Unfortunately, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair.

Why is this important?

I am a proud American with a strong interest in the history of our country, and this project is important to me because I believe that we should preserve history. This project will make sure that these veterans will not be forgotten for what they did in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Thank You.

Below are some pictures of the cemetery. It is in the middle of 2 different farms. More explanation will be put under each picture.
One of the gravestones at the cemetery. Most gravestones are either knocked over or unidentifiable as they are old and have weathered away with time

This is one of the gravestones of a veteran buried there, specifically Private Charles Harrington of the 11th NY Infantry division.

This is the current entry arch to the cemetery constructed in the 1980s

This is a picture of the cemetery taken in 2006. Note the Oak tree, that is one of the four placed in the corners to demarcate it. (Source: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2144472/jerseyville-cemetery/photo)
