I started this project because I believe every patient deserves to feel comfortable, confident, and like themselves, even in the hospital. Too often, kids and teenagers are stuck wearing gowns that are uncomfortable and take away a piece of their personality, specifically those with IV lines, mediports, abdominal drains, or dialysis access.
This is why I’m creating hoodies that are both functional and fun. Each one has carefully placed openings on the chest, arms, and abdomen so medical teams can provide care without the patient having to take off their clothes.
But comfort is only part of it. With the help of Direct-to-Film printing, I can add designs that feel personal, like sports teams, favorite characters, symbols, and more. This way, every hoodie reflects the personality of the person wearing it. I am lucky enough to be supported by my school through a program called Compass, which allows high school students at Western Reserve Academy to pursue a “passion project.”
As a teenage girl, I know how good it feels to put on something new and instantly feel more confident. That’s the feeling I hope to give to every patient with whom I can connect. Success within this project is not just about creating comfortable and functional clothes; it's about empowering patients to feel like themselves, with their illness. If I could help one pediatric patient feel confident, unique, and comfortable through their treatment, I would have felt an extraordinary amount of success!
