In August of this year our sweet sister Heidi’s life changed unexpectedly when she had to undergo a below-the-knee amputation. In the blink of an eye, her world was turned upside down.

Heidi, who is intellectually disabled, lives at home with our mom, who is her full-time caregiver. Our mom does an incredible job providing for Heidi’s needs, but this sudden life change has placed a tremendous emotional and financial strain on both of them.

Since Heidi’s return home from the hospital, our family has had to purchase many necessary items to help with her daily life - things like a hospital bed, bedside commode, wheelchairs, and bathing assistance equipment. In addition, major home modifications are needed, such as remodeling a bathroom so her wheelchair can fit and installing a handicap-accessible shower.

Another important need is purchasing a small trailer to haul Heidi’s power wheelchair so she can get out of the house and back to doing the things she loves. She will also be attending physical and occupational therapy 3–5 times a week, which means reliable transportation is key.

For those who know Heidi, you know she is truly a social butterfly. She loves people, making new friends, coloring, crafting, sports (especially the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Blues, Indiana Pacers, & Indianapolis Colts), and all things pink and glittery. She’s a bright light who brings joy everywhere she goes. Her favorite music artist is Taylor Swift, and her phone and iPad are her favorite ways to connect with friends and family.

Looking ahead, one of Heidi’s biggest goals is to one day get a prosthetic leg, once her body is ready. This would give her even more independence and allow her to return to doing many of the things she enjoys.
