SOS - Can you support our Ukrainian Family

Dear Friends and Family,

Over the past two years, we have been deeply committed to helping our distant Ukrainian family navigate the crazy and ongoing war in Ukraine. This family, consisting of Sasha Havryliuk (Dad), Olha Katiushets (Mom), Yaroslava (15 years old), Anzhelika (10 years old), and the youngest member, Mark (1 year old), holds a special place in our hearts as John's cousin once removed. Although we had never met them in person, fate brought us together seven months ago when they sought refuge in Alberta.

With support, Sasha and his family managed to reach the relative safety of Poland when the conflict first erupted. Fueled by the dream of starting a new life in Canada, they secured visas and flights with the help of Ukranians4Ukranians, arriving in Alberta in February 2023. This all happened within two weeks! During this quick and challenging transition, our local community of friends rallied together, providing the essential furnishings for a rental house we were able to secure in Calgary. John also helped Sasha secure employment as an Ironworker in Calgary, where he's been working every hour offered to him to provide for his family.

Beginning a new life in a foreign land while mastering a new language is a formidable endeavor under ordinary circumstances. However, the shadow of war and the constant worry for loved ones still in Ukraine has added an extra layer of complexity and stress to their journey. Sasha and Olha share a desire - to reunite with Olha's mother and bring her to Canada, allowing her to escape the realities of the ongoing conflict. Having Olha's mother safely by their side would not only alleviate the anxiety of separation but also empower Olha to join the workforce, knowing her children are well cared for. The economic reality of becoming financially secure also necessitates the need for Olha to be able to earn an income.

As friends have heard about our Ukrainian family story, many have wanted to give them money to support them as they start their new life. This fundraiser is in response to this request and provides a secure platform for friends and family to donate. We have initiated this fundraiser to make Olha's dream of reuniting with her mother a reality. The funds raised will be dedicated to covering the expenses associated with her relocation to Canada, including a plane ticket, accommodation, and additional resources she may require for her journey. Any surplus funds will be directed towards ensuring she has the necessary warm winter clothing, which will be essential in the Canadian climate. To be clear, John and I are purchasing the plane ticket for Olha's Mom and after covering this cost, we will give the family the remainder of any funds received.
