Hi, my name is Karl Williams, owner and head coach of CrossFit Pioneer, and I want to introduce you to Sophia.
Now just three years of age, she was born with Campomelic Dysplasia and is nothing short of a miracle. Despite having a rare life-limiting condition that requires 24/7 life-support, she exemplifies strength and what it means to be alive!
She lights up the gym when she arrives, exudes happiness but the truth is, her condition is complex.
Sophia has no voice due to a tracheostomy (though still makes herself heard), can't walk, and daily defies what doctors thought possible.
Sophia faces challenges most of us can't comprehend, and for the family to support their daughters' everyday needs, require an environment fit for purpose. To do so, they hope to embark on a home renovation. At present, it is extremely difficult and unsafe to carry both Sophia and her life-support equipment up and down the stairs.
We want to raise what we can to make that possible.
An extension will provide a safe, accessible space on the ground floor, mitigating the risks associated with lifting and moving. A ceiling hoist system will allow safe and dignified transfers for her care, while a fully adapted wet room, will provide safe bathing and personal care facilities as she grows and develops.
Wider doorways ensures access throughout the home, with a dedicated play space where she can interact, learn, and enjoy playtime safely. A storeroom will provide an essential space to house her everyday medical requirements.
A sensory garden in the outdoor space, designed not only for her stimulation and development but also as a shared area where she and her older brothers can play together.
This extension is not simply about improving the home—it's a vital element for their daughter's health, safety, comfort, and quality of life, and will give a true "family" home to nurture her needs.
With her condition so rare, financial support is in short supply, they work hard as a family 24/7 to both care for and meet the needs in front of them, as a gym community we are simply holding them up as best we can.
She’s One in a Million and her chances of a life where even slimmer than that, which is why we will be rowing a million metres for every year she’s been with us. So as we take 3million metres over a weekend starting Friday 21st November, would you join with us, donate and significantly impact a little life beyond how she has already impacted ours.
Thank you.
