We can all agree on one thing -- COVID sucks. But, COVID sucks a lot less for me than it does for most. Luckily, I’m still employed, healthy, and fortunate enough to have both great roommates and the technology to stay in touch with the other people who are important in my life. For those who are less fortunate, COVID can mean loss of a job, loss of critical resources, and loss of mental stability.
Throughout my life, like many of us, I’ve had my own struggles with mental health and depression. From the time I was in 4th grade and first started competitive cross country, running has been my go-to outlet for dealing with these struggles. Especially in these times, running has been -- and will continue to be -- critically important for my mental health and well-being.
COVID presents a unique challenge for those struggling with mental health and depression --isolation and uncertainty are natural triggers for anxiety and depression. In light of this all, I’ll be running a solo marathon (social distancing approved!) on May 16th in Washington DC and fundraising for Mental Health awareness. All donations will be going to The Jed Foundation, an incredible NPO that works in mental health advocacy and suicide prevention for teens and college-aged students.
Will this marathon be fast? No. Will I be in pain? You bet. Will I Instagram live it? Also yes.
It’s our collective responsibility to be there for the people who need it most right now. Let’s do something cool and raise money for a meaningful cause.
More information about The Jed Foundation: JED is a national nonprofit that exists to protect emotional health and prevent suicide for our nation's teens and young adults. We're partnering with high schools and colleges to strengthen their mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention programs and systems. We're equipping teens and young adults with the skills and knowledge to help themselves and each other. We're encouraging community awareness, understanding and action for young adult mental health.
