The Jed Foundation

On October 4th, 2025, I am undertaking a significant challenge to support The Jed Foundation, a leading organization dedicated to protecting emotional health and preventing suicide among teens and young adults. This cause is deeply personal to me, as my family has been impacted by mental health challenges.

To honor my loved ones and raise funds for this vital work, I will be completing an "Everesting" challenge. This intense cycling feat involves riding my bike up and down a single hill repeatedly until I have climbed a total of 29,029 feet—the equivalent height of Mount Everest—in one ride.

Your support would mean the world to me and to the countless young people who will benefit from The Jed Foundation's programs and resources. I am seeking donations to help me reach my fundraising goal.

What is Everesting?

Everesting is a physical and mental endurance challenge in which a cyclist repeatedly climbs and descends a single hill until they have accumulated a total elevation gain of 29,029 feet, the height of Mount Everest. The challenge must be completed in a single ride, with no sleep breaks. It is a grueling test of will, stamina, and determination.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a month to remember the many lives lost to suicide. But this is also a month to remind us of all the people suffering from suicidal ideation and mental health issues. My goal with this fundraiser is to spread awareness and relief for the individuals, families, and communities facing the challenges that come with suicide and mental health challenges. I’m doing this for the children, teens, and young adults who are too afraid to speak up, the ones who suffer in silence. Among individuals ages 10-34, suicide is the second leading cause of death. This is a big issue in our world today that, as individuals, we should be more aware of. So I ask you to please educate yourself on these issues and the impact they have on people of all ages. Please check on your kids, friends, family members, colleagues, and fellow students. Many people struggle with mental health and, in many cases, it goes unnoticed. This cause is very important to my heart as I’ve personally dealt with years of suicidal ideation and mental health struggles since I was 13-14 years old. I was not diagnosed with anxiety and depression till I was 17 years old. Throughout my journey to recovery, I’ve learned it is not easy and I still struggle to this day. But I’ve met so many different people along the way that made me realize I wasn’t alone, I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. And meeting them throughout my journey has really helped me not only find myself again but also to relearn how to navigate the world as a young person. So please, if you notice any sign of suicidal ideation, depression, or anxiety in a friend, a family member, or a colleague, talk to them. Ask if they’re okay. So they too can feel like they are not alone.

My cousin, Michael, brother-in law, Rob and I will be running the Buffalo Marathon on May 25 in honor of my brother Joe. We are running to raise awareness for suicide prevention. All the money we raise will be donated in Joe’s name to the Jed Foundation because of the important work they do for young people in need of support who may find it difficult to ask for help.

The Jed Foundation (JED) is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting mental health and emotional well-being for young people, particularly college and high school students. It works to prevent suicide, reduce substance abuse, and support mental health through various programs, resources, and partnerships with schools and communities. My name is Julia Masnica, and I am currently going through the process of my leadership program. One of my goals was to raise money for a charity that I felt passionate about. Hi there! As a class group from the University of North Texas, we would like to bring your attention to an organization that means a lot to us. It is called The Jed Foundation.

A suicide prevention foundation supporting children, teenagers and even communities through mental health services is made possible thanks to the Jed Foundation. It was established 25 years ago after the shocking suicide of Jed who was just a teenager. The foundation provides essential mental health education so children do not miss out on the support they need and deserve.

A haunting fact is suicide is the second leading cause of death in teenagers. An alarming number of youngsters undergo treacherous battles with deep rooted anxiety, stress, trauma and depression without seeking support. They are made to feel vulnerable, voiceless and utterly alone. However, with the right support, children can open up about mental health struggles instead of staying silent. The Jed Foundation aims to eliminate that feeling of solitude by giving children the resources and hope to enable them to see they are not on their own.

Reality check – some statistics to consider

Remember the saying, “numbers don’t lie”? Well, in our case, lets just say we wish it were true.

For the range of 10 to 24 years of age, suicide stands at the number 2 spot of leading causes of death.

Young people die more frequently from suicide in contrast to suffering from cancer, heart disease or any other medical condition combined.

Males ages 15 to 24 die by suicide at a greater rate compared to their female counterparts in the same age group.

How The Jed Foundation Helps

The Jed Foundation assists children, parents, teachers and especially adolescents in crisis. There is no child that should feel so alone that he or she thinks the world will be better off without them. Every child deserves the right to feel that they belong, that they are valued and needed.

Funds collected for The Jed Foundation help to:

✅ Strengthen Schools - Providing mental health education and training to the high school and college levels. Workshops improve mental health literacy and arm students with help-seeking tools.

✅ Equip Individuals - Advocating for storytelling and the Seize the Awkward campaign, to foster connections between young people and mental health support.

✅ Mobilize Communities - Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention through civic engagement advocacy.

On average, one person dies by suicide every eight hours in the state of Virginia. It is one of the top causes of death for persons ages 15-34. *

We believe that creating more awareness and lifting the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, we can start conversations that can reduce deaths by suicide. We have the new 988 number available for crisis calls but we can do more.

People are always checking out license plates when on the road or in parking lots. Just think about it, you could help save someone’s life.

Virginia DMV has to have 450 pre-ordered and prepaid license plate applications before they will start offering these plates. Your money is refunded if they do not get 450 applications.

Please consider donating and ordering your license plate to help bring mental health awareness into the light. People need to know that they are worthy, they are loved and they matter!

My name is Alex Lara. I am working alongside Bella Popiolek and Makayla Lockhart on a project at Clarkston High School to improve learning in school environments and reduce grade-induced stress. Our goal is to better the mental health of teens within our community, ultimately reducing suicide rates and anxiety from school.

Jordan Roth took his life on December 14th, 2021. This heart-wrenching trauma takes place far too often to families all across the United State and the world.
