RISE UP WOMEN / ATARICHI WARMIGUNA
Heartfelt greetings from the Amazon! We are a group of Indigenous women from the Ecuadorian Amazon, belonging to the Kichwa nationality, along with a Colombian fashion designer, who has lived in our community for over 10 years.
We live in a small village in the Province of Napo, Ahuano, mostly inhabited by native people and some settlers. Ahuano and this area of the Amazon sustains itself mainly from tourism income, with many hotels and lodges in the area. The tourism business has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many families have lost income from the closure of hotels and other tourist ventures and most of our husbands have had to return to the countryside to plant and sell crops as well as provide food for the family. Unfortunately the income generated is not enough to support the whole family and as a result, women are the most affected. Additionally, unemployment has led to increased alcohol consumption and domestic violence.
With the goal to become financially independent, we have launched a project called Rise Up Women which teaches us to sew and create home furnishings using recycled clothing and materials from our local area. Many of us are skilled and fast learners and this project has brought us a great sense of pride and automony. Rise Up Women has the full support of Silvia, a designer and who will be instrumental in guiding the project and workshops.
Due to the generous donation of fourteen industrial sewing machines, we are off to a good start, however there are still challenges to face. The machines need maintenance and to be properly set up in the working space.
We will be working in a space (an old boarding shool) that has generously been provided by our local Parish. The Josefinos community has done mission work in our area for many years. Our donated space needs many repairs as it has not been in use for quite some time. (with the exception of the owls and bats who live there.) We must replace windows and doors as well as install a new roof and electrical wiring. The building also will need painting.
Silvia will be collaborating with others in the design community to mentor and serve as trainers to help us produce quality products, which are sold both locally and abroad. We want to make products that uniquely reflect the spirit and beauty of our home in the Amazon.
Because we are not financed by any bank or institution, we are relying on the generous support of our donors to help us succeed. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated.
We hope that you will consider supporting our significant mission which will enable us to live more sustainably, and with greater autonomy. We are LEVANTENSE MUJERES (RISE UP WOMEN) or in the Kichwa language ATARICHI WARMIGUNA.

Hola! Somos un grupo de mujeres indígenas de la amazonia ecuatoriana, pertenecientes a la nacionalidad Kichwa, y una diseñadora de moda colombiana, que desde hace 10 años vive en nuestra comunidad.
Estamos en un pequeño pueblo de la Provincia de Napo, Ahuano, en su mayoría habitado por gente nativa y algunos colonos. Ahuano y esta zona de la amazonia, viven principalmente de los ingresos del turismo, ya que existen muchos hoteles en la zona. Estos ingresos se han visto afectados por la pandemia del COVID-19.
Son muchas familias las que hemos dejado de percibir ingresos por el cierre de hoteles y otros emprendimientos turísticos, la mayoría de nuestros maridos involucrados en el sector tuvo que regresar al campo, pero lo que producen no es lo suficiente para sostener a toda la familia, y nosotras, las mujeres somos las mas afectadas, pues, el desempleo, la desocupación ha hecho que haya un aumento en el consumo de alcohol. por consiguiente, ha aumentado la violencia intrafamiliar.
Buscamos independizarnos económicamente, y tenemos un proyecto el cual ya ha tenido varios apoyos. Este proyecto es un taller de confección, donde podamos desarrollar productos con características de la zona. Muchas de nosotras somos hábiles y aprendemos rápido. Ademas tenemos el apoyo en este grupo de Silvia, que es diseñadora y ella se encargara de la dirección del taller y los proyectos.
Es difícil por nuestros propios medios adecuar el lugar y poner a punto las maquinas.
Silvia recibió de una benefactora una donación de unas máquinas de coser industriales (14), que necesitan mantenimiento.
También tenemos el espacio, que pertenece a la Parroquia, era parte del antiguo internado de los padres Josefinos que han hecho misión en esta zona de la amazonia, este lugar necesita muchas reparaciones ya que desde hace mucho tiempo no recibe atención. Debemos poner ventanas, hacer la instalación eléctrica, puertas metálicas para tener seguro el lugar, cerrar los techos para que no entren los búhos y murciélagos y pintar, para poder empezar pronto.
También debemos conseguir los insumos para crear nuestro producto y poder contratar a unos capacitadores que nos preparen para tener un producto de calidad, que se venda tanto localmente como en el exterior. Queremos un producto con denominación de origen.
Recurrimos a esta plataforma para recaudar los fondos que necesitamos pues nosotras no tenemos capacidad económica para realizar las adecuaciones con nuestros medios, tampoco tenemos respaldo bancario o alguna institución que nos financie.
Confiamos en que serán muchas personas las que darán su apoyo económico a este proyecto que se llama LEVANTENSE MUJERES o en lengua Kichwa SHAYARISHUN WARMICUNA . Pues queremos empezar a trabajar en 45 dias.
