Dear Family, Friends, Troop 648 and Community Members,
As many of you know, I am a Boy Scout in Troop 648, located in Scottsdale, AZ. I am a Life Scout working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. One of the requirements is to plan and execute a service project that benefits our community.
I have always wanted to do a project that would help veterans and animals. I have chosen Soldier’s Best Friend (SBF) as the beneficiary and feel honored to work with them. SBF pairs dogs with veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury to help improve their quality of life. Most of the dogs have been rescued from Arizona shelters, which helps the pet overpopulation.
The veteran and dog team train together until the dog qualifies for service or therapeutic companion dog status. The training program is provided to qualified veterans at no cost. This program serves as a parallel support plan to each veteran’s medical treatment and aims to lesson their risk for future hospitalization, homelessness, incarceration, domestic abuse, and or suicide.
SBF is in great need of dog agility equipment to help veteran and dog teams train together to build a trusting relationship. The equipment will help strengthen skills and build bonds. I am seeking donations to purchase materials to build multiple pieces of dog agility equipment including a seesaw, jumps, collapsible tunnel and a ground ladder.
My fellow scouts, adult leaders, friends, and family members will help me complete this project by volunteering their time and expertise. My project will take place at Chaparral Christian Church on March 2nd, 2019.
Any donation is greatly appreciated! If I exceed my fundraising goal of $2,600, the extra funds will go directly to Soldier’s Best Friend. Thank you for your consideration to help veterans, dogs, and me.
Sincerely,
Michael McFetters
